Baidhurya Mani over at Sell Courses Online recently published an interesting study looking at the tech stacks used by different WordPress LMS plugins, including LearnDash. Our very own Design Upgrade for LearnDash plugin received high marks; it is being used on at least 10% of LearnDash websites.
The study looked at 8 of the most popular WordPress LMS plugins, and only included data if a site was using one of them. BuiltWith was used to access the data. About 240,000 sites were found in October 2022 using the following 8 LMS plugins:

WordPress LMS Study Findings
- LearnDash is the most popular WordPress LMS plugin with over 34% market share (83,415 websites)
- WooCommerce is used by over 65% of these WordPress LMS sites
- Astra is by far the most commonly used theme
- More than 90% of the websites use a page builder, 57.5% of which use Elementor (137,859 sites)
- BuddyBoss is used on 13% of LearnDash sites
- Paid Memberships Pro is by far the most popular membership plugin used by LMS websites
